Medical Restorative Massage Therapy

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy is the advanced practice of:
  • Reducing pain and restoring physical function,
  • Through the active application of blended massage therapy techniques,
  • Within the structure of the M. T. Wellness Medical Model

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy is a new discipline that represents the synthesis of multiple established techniques along with new techniques developed at the M. T. Wellness Clinic. It is based on the blended application of multiple advanced massage therapy techniques with the objective of reducing pain and restoring physical function.

The foundations of the discipline are an in-depth understanding of the human body, an awareness of how the body responds to specific passive and active massage therapy techniques, and the application massage therapy services within the structure of a medical model.

For the therapist, two keys to this technique are (1) the knowledge of when to apply which technique and why, and (2) when to use passive versus active applications of those techniques.

The M.T. Wellness Master Center is the first advanced training that offers the Licensed Massage Therapist the opportunity to develop skills to treat the medically complex patient that presents with pain and decreased function. This training articulates with the new M.T. Wellness - Medical Model Massage Institute, the first program for training students for licensure as a Massage Therapist in the state of Ohio with the additional skills to practice in the medical model.

The Masters Center core curriculum begins with:

  • The comprehensive Integrated Passive Massage Techniques course including myofascial release, trigger point, sport massage, neuro-muscular and medical restorative.
  • The curriculum builds on this foundation with new OrthoRelease Course which develops skill to treat pain in patients that have difficulty tolerating any touch, including light touch.
  • The Concentric/Eccentric Muscles Pairs Treatment Techniques Course is a unique active massage approach to balancing the body and restoring function.
  • The Functional Anatomy Course helps you to understand how the body moves. It builds on the anatomy you learned in Massage School. This gives you the necessary understanding for the active massage techniques.
  • The Assessment Skills Course helps you avoid chasing the pain. You will learn to determine what structures are painful or not functioning properly. Each patient is treated for their pain and lack of function with an individualized Plan of Care.
  • The Medical Lectures Course provides the critical information to help treat the medically complex patient and “Do No Harm”.
  • The Functional Information Course teaches you how to document your assessment and treatment. You will be prepared to communicate with other healthcare providers and be a valuable part of the team.

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy is also different from other techniques in that it is practiced within the structure of a medical model. In this context, the therapist becomes part of each patient’s health care team and they work closely with physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors and rehabilitative service providers to provide total care to their patients.

The M. T. Wellness medical model is a structured process designed to identify the underlying causes of a patient’s dysfunctions and then develop and execute a plan of care that will reduce pain and restore physical function.

The key steps in the M. T. Wellness model are:

  • Assess each client’s condition and identify specific dysfunctions continuously during the course of therapy. This step includes information provided by the patient and information gathered through observation of the patient’s posture, gait, and body alignment.
  • Develop objectives and a personalized plan of care that includes appropriate active and passive techniques.
  • Execute the Plan of Care.
  • Maintain charts and records to monitor progress. This step is repeated before and after each massage.
  • Communicate and work closely with other members of the patient’s health care team including physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors regarding the client’s progress and condition.
